Vintage Spiers & Pond Corkscrew – Antique Wire Helix

A rare vintage Spiers & Pond corkscrew. Beautifully simple in design, the wooden handle has rounded ends & a single strand wire mount. The twisted steel wire shank ends with a simple wire helix. The handle is marked on both sides with bold but faded lettering ‘Spiers & Pond Ltd’. Width of handle: 9cm (3). Length: 11.5cm (4). Weight: 31g (just over 1oz). Spiers & Pond was the first large-scale catering business in the world, established by Felix William Spiers & Christopher Pond who first worked together in 1858. They later went on to establish refreshment bars in numerous London railway stations, as well as restaurants & hotels throughout the UK. The company continued until 1969. The lettering on the handle is worn & faded but still legible. There is a small amount of circular movement of the wooden handle within the wire mount.
