What Are Optics in a Bar?

Have you ever gone to the pub and seen bottles of liquor hanging upside down? That my friends is a bar optic. This unique contraption is mounted on the wall and holds multiple bottles of inverted liquor. The whole point of bar optics is for it to dispense the correct amount of liquor for each drink without having to measure anything out. Some bars rely solely on optics while others free pour and some bars do a mixture of both — it really all depends on the bar and the bartender.

How Does an Optic Measure Work?

An optic measure is designed to ensure that the correct amount of alcohol is dispensed without leaking. You will place your spirit bottle upside down on the bar optic rack and make sure that it is securely fastened in place. Place an optic measure cork in the bottle (if you don’t you might be in for a mess and a lot of wasted alcohol). Then use your glass to either push up on the dispenser or push back, depending on what kind of bar optic you have. Bar optics measure can dispense anywhere from 25ml, 35ml, or even 50ml of liquid per dispersion effortlessly and without the need of a jig.

What Drinks Are on Optics?

While you can technically put whatever liquor you want on your at-home optic there are some that are better for your bar optic than others. The top liquors to hook up to your optic is rum, whiskey, gin, and vodka. While you can put any liquor you want in your bar optic, we recommend only using it for liquors and not liqueurs. Liqueurs are usually more sugary and thick which will clog up your optics. If you decide that you still want to, just make sure to thoroughly clean your unit often and thoroughly.

How to Clean Bar Optics

Once a week make sure that you are deep cleaning your system. You don’t want all of that money to go to waste because of something as simple as cleaning.

First, you will want to remove the optic measure and soak them in hot water to get off anything that has crusted. After that create a soapy mixture with water and dish soap and soak the measures in that afterward. Soak them for a good 15-30 minutes and then rinse with cold water. Make sure you have completely rinsed them off or you may be getting some soap bubbles in your next cocktail.

How Often Should You Clean Bar Optics?

You should clean bar optics at least once a week. If you are working in a bar and have a high volume bar optic then you should be cleaning it nightly.

How Do I Refill My Optics?

No need to be overwhelmed when it’s time to change out your empty liquor bottle for a new one in your bar optic. All you need to do is make sure that you have a firm grip on the empty bottle, pull the pin out, and remove the empty liquor bottle. Twist the optic measure from the bottle and remove it. Once released insert it into your full bottle of liquor. Securely grab your full liquor bottle and turn it upside down. Make sure the bottle is secured on the top and at the base of the optic. Always double-check that it is firmly in place and won’t drop to the floor the moment you walk away and that’s it. You have successfully changed out your optic.

A bar optic is a great way to start your at-home bar journey. They look great, there’s no need to measure anything, and you get to show off your amazing bartending skills at your next cocktail party.
