Marcel-Louis Baugniet (Lige , 18 March 1896 – Brussels , 1 February 1995) Baugniet was one of the leading exponents of abstract art in Belgium before he embarked on a career in furniture design. Largely influenced by the geometry & constructivism of the Bauhaus movement, Baugniet began designing furniture. He started his own business as a decorator in Brussels in 1930 & introduced his furniture at the Exposition Internationale des Arts et Techniques dans la Vie Moderne in 1937 in Paris. He designed for the ballets of his wife, Marguerite Acarin, alias the dancer Akarova , costumes. Baugniet & Akarova split up soon after their marriage in 1928, but they always remained friends. They lived together in Ixelles & were both nearly a century old. Van Baugniet also has a number of illustrations for sheet music covers for the music publishers F. Lauwerijns & A. Isae. After 1945 he made almost only collages & furniture designs. in Brussels he had a store where he sold his objects. After an apprenticeship, he studied at the Brussels Academy, where he had Paul Delvaux & Ren Magritte as fellow students , Baugniet went to Paris . He met Ossip Zadkine & Fernand Lger, among others . in 1922 he returned to Brussels, where Felix De Boeck , Victor Servranckx became companions. The influence of the Bauhaus & De Stijl can be seen in his work . He was also familiar with the work of Le Corbusier , Vasarely, Sonia Delaunay, & Henry Van de Velde . At the Museum for Modern & Contemporary Art in Lige, a major retrospective exhibition was devoted to Baugnite in 2001.
