Is Luc Belaire a Wine or Champagne?

Luc Belaire is, in fact, a sparkling wine. You may be wondering what the difference is since they sound the same anyway. For one, for champagne to be champagne then it has to be crafted in France. If it isn’t, then it is just sparkling wine. France takes great pride in its grape harvest and only certain grapes can even be used when it comes to marketing champagne. There are different methods and grapes used that will change your bottle from sparkling wine to champagne.

Secondly, the method is everything. For a Sparkling wine, the fermentation process combines yeast, sugar, alcohol, and CO2 all mixed together. The wine once securely closed and sealed can begin to ferment and carbon dioxide begins to form in tiny bubbles which creates the delightful carbonation we know as champagne.

Third, for a wine to become champagne it is strictly controlled by the Appellation d’Origine Controlée (The AOC). They regulate how the grapes are grown, when they should be harvested, how they have to be taken care of, and how they are processed all to be allowed the name of “Champagne”.  Only true champagne must be made in the Champagne region of France.

So while Luc Belaire is made in France and is very highly esteemed, it is only sparkling wine and not champagne due to where the grapes are grown, (Burgundy and Provence) and because it is not regulated by the AOC.
