THE PROHIBITION BAR Our versatile & unique ‘PROHIBITION’ bar & drinks cabinets are made from reclaimed oak whisky barrels, that are sometimes decades old. The heavy & durable oak barrels are brimming with character & distinctive features making each cabinet totally individual. Did you know? The prohibition was first introduced in the US in 1920 & lasted a full 13 years! Across the Atlantic, Scotch whisky producers coined their own nickname for the unwelcome legislation, dry rot. However this did not stop the production & exportation of whisky as it was smuggled through neighbouring countries, such as Canada. Who knows, one of our bespoke bars might have even been used to smuggle whisky all those years ago! THE OUTSIDE: When we first get hold of the barrel after it’s years of service housing the finest whisky, the outside is often coated in years of dust, dirt, & rust. We meticulously work the oak whilst maintaining its unique features & then carefully remove the rust from the steel bands, just enough to achieve our staple rustic & reclaimed look. We then begin to craft two perfectly formed doors for the front of the cabinet, hanging them with rustic fittings & a latch, so that you can hide away your tipple of choice (just like those in 1920’s America). Finally, we preserve the entire barrel with a combination of varnish, wax & clear lacquer. THE INSIDE: When the barrel is first used for aging whisky, the inside is burnt & charred, caramelising the wood sugars to result in a smoother, mellower flavour. We take time to treat & preserve the dark black charred interior so that it doesn’t flake or bleach when exposed to day-light. We add a shelf that can be used to store books, collectables, bottles, glasses, decanter sets…or anything else you can think of! Due to the nature of the item, the ‘EXCHEQUER’ will be delivered on a pallet & will require a signature. It is not suitable for click & collect.
