We love these! Seven vintage beer mats featuring Ansell pub signs. The Ansells Brewery was founded in 1857 in Birmingham by Joseph Ansell & is a great British brewery name. in no particular order the signs are for: The Prince of Wales, a pub sign showing loyalty to the Royal family The Peacock – a sign with an unknown origin, although the flesh of the bird was thought to be incorruptible. The Bridge Inn – a pub sign usually found near a canal or river, a traditional spot for an English pub or Inn. The Starting Gate – always with horse racing connections, in this case, the pub was built on the site of a racecourse. The Hope & Anchor – a sign with religious significance, Hope as the Anchor of the Soul (St. Paul). The Red Lion – one of the most popular Inn signs, the Red Lion has been used in the arms of British Kings since the Norman Conquest. The Vine/The Grapes – a garland of hops was hung outside to draw the attention of the official ale taster. All the beer mats are in super vintage condition with no tears.
