In the glass, this builds to show itself as a complex, virtuoso wine that has been recognised as one of New Zealand’s best. Tasting note: Passionfruit and gooseberry surrounded by guava and lemon flavours that run smoothly through the palate hemmed by a subtle mineral tone and soft acids. The name Gem is symbolic of our approach – picking from the best regions & vineyard sites says the winemaker Corey but, it is also his wife’s, Meg, name backwards. The name is something Corey thought of while brainstorming (or surfing – depending on who you ask!) Corey and Megan Hall are passionate about producing single vineyard, handcrafted wines. They are involved at every stage from the selection of vineyard sites through to the winemaking and tasting of their wines with others. Gem wines are about moments in time when you feel truly alive. Corey grew up around the beaches, orchards and vineyards of West Auckland. After gaining a BSc in chemistry at the University of Auckland, Corey joined the Matua Valley winery where he worked for 10 years, rising to the position of Senior Winemaker. During that time he graduated from the University of Adelaide with a Graduate Diploma in Oenology. He has worked as a winemaker in Australia, France and California. Food pairing: this wine will be a perfect match with starters, seafood, butter cooked fish and Asian food.
