Colonel E.H. Taylor Four Grain Bourbon – Jim Murray’s 2018 World Whisky of the year!! In the words of the man himself: Nothing could match the astonishing beauty of its surprisingly delicate weight and complexity combined. It was though time stood still in the tasting room; I just knewHailing from Buffalo Trace, this brand applies methods and mashbills comparable to those introduced by Colonel E. H. Taylor. He was a bourbon distiller in the late 1800’s. This particular example is a Four Grain Bourbon meaning after the mandatory 51% corn, the mashbill is made up of 3 other grains – rye, wheat and barley are the most common – rather than the usual one or two.A rare bottle and one to catch before it’s gone!! Nose: Loads and loads of up front fruity caramel. Floral honey aspects too, and a little sugar. Very citrussy; dried oranges as well as fresh orange zest. The wheat seems to have more of a hand on the tiller than the rye; spices are very much a secondary consideration, and the DNA seems closer to the Weller family than to the Stagg. Slight hazelnut Nutella even as it sits. Palate: Deliciously silky delivery; the fruity, floral caramels and honey. Orange and candied lemon swell alongside the caramel.Finish: Cinnamon creeps in, followed by very pronounced hazelnuts, cereal and wholemeal. The lightest flutter of black pepper and rye spice play in the background.
